Why Berrydale

Why US Importers Choose Berrydale

Regulatory Framework

USDA-APHIS Compliance for Indian Mango Imports

Importing Indian mangoes to the USA requires navigating a strict regulatory framework established in 2007 (7 CFR Parts 305 and 319) and remains fully in effect for 2026. Every requirement below is mandatory. Check official mango import requirements at USDA ACIR database.

01
Irradiation Treatment - 400 Gray
Minimum absorbed dose of 400 Gy using Cobalt-60 gamma irradiation at a USDA-approved facility under on-site APHIS inspector supervision.
  • -Targets all insect pests including fruit flies, mango seed weevil, and scale insects
  • -Dosimetry verified via Alanine or Ceric/Cerous dosimeters
  • -3 USDA-approved facilities in India: Navi Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad
02
Hot Water Fungicidal Dip
Pre-irradiation treatment targeting fungal pathogens including anthracnose and stem-end rot. Must be completed before transport to the irradiation facility.
  • -Temperature: 52 degrees C for 3-4 minutes
  • -Prochloraz at 500 ppm or sodium hypochlorite at 200 ppm
  • -Separate and independently mandatory from irradiation
03
PPQ Form 203 - Critical Document
The single most consequential document. Incorrectly completed PPQ-203 forms caused $500K in shipment destruction in May 2025 despite fully treated fruit.
  • -Issued exclusively by on-site USDA-APHIS inspector in India
  • -Original must accompany every shipment to the US
  • -No correction mechanism at US ports - errors result in destruction
04
USDA Import Permit
US importers must obtain a USDA-APHIS import permit before Indian mangoes can legally enter the country. This is the importer's responsibility.
  • -Apply via APHIS eFile - minimum 30 days before first shipment
  • -For April 2026 season, apply by end of February 2026
  • -Permit number must appear on all phytosanitary certificates
05
Traceability - PUC and PHC Codes
Complete farm-to-port traceability is mandatory. Every package must carry registered codes traceable back to the specific orchard and packinghouse.
  • -PUC (Production Unit Code) - unique registered orchard identifier
  • -PHC (Packinghouse Code) - registered packinghouse identifier
  • -Date of packing and lot number on every carton
06
2026 Regulatory Status
APHIS published a draft pest risk assessment in March 2025 proposing transfer of irradiation oversight to India's NPPO. No change applies for the 2026 season.
  • -Public comment period closed April 23, 2025
  • -No final rule published as of March 2026
  • -All 2026 requirements remain fully unchanged

Air freight is the dominant cost at 50 - 65% of total landed cost. This is why Indian mangoes retail at 5 - 10x the price of Mexican Tommy Atkins varieties in the US. The premium reflects variety exclusivity and compliance investment. Berrydale's farm-to-airport proximity in Konkan minimises pre-freight handling time and cold chain risk.
